You read that title right- today was 50 of the Summer Run Streak! Things are going well, and I’m excited to keep this up through the rest of the summer. Before I started this little adventure, I hadn’t even run a week straight.
There are a few things that are helping me on this journey.
My foam roller- if you don’t have one, get one. You’ll hate it and love it all at the same time!
My Monday night group run crew- while most of my runs are solo endeavors, it’s great to touch base with these guys, whether we’re celebrating or commiserating.
And a new one as of this week- my PRO Compression marathon socks. I’ve used various brands of compression socks and calf sleeves, and the black and yellow pairs I picked up this week from PRO Compression are great. And I have never seen a client base that so rabidly endorses a product.
And so, after a couple of runs in my PRO Compression gear, I want you to join the bandwagon! They’ve got a 40% discount site-wide (plus FREE shipping) through August 4th. Check out their website, and use the promo code JULY when checking out. Your legs will thank you!
This week has been a pretty solid one, from a training standpoint (You can scroll down to the numbers if you’re just dying to see. I won’t tell.). On the nutritional front, however, things haven’t been so stellar.
I’ve been relying heavily on the, “I run every day. Did you hear that? EVERY. DAY.” conversation (either internally or externally) when justifying some of the things I cram in my face. I know that I can’t possibly be working off all of the calories I am consuming. But I run every day, see?
This is the negative feedback loop I’ve been stuck in the past couple of weeks. Plus, it’s been hot (I’m not sure if you’ve noticed), so the wife and I are less inclined to want to heat up the entire house by cooking at home. Oh, and Little Man loves to go to restaurants (which is kind of weird, because he oftentimes acts as if he is on a two-hour pass from the looney bin once we get anywhere).
So there you have it. Hot weather, eating out, running every day (Did I mention that already?). I think I may have had a breakthrough moment this week when I ran across the following:
This is what I needed to see! So much so that I printed it off real big (at work, of course) so that I could stick it on my fridge. So far, it has only made it as far as my work bag. But I know it’s there, so that counts, right?
Apparently, some actual change in behavior is required. I wasn’t thinking about that when I ordered a giant grilled enchilada that night. Needless to say, my run that night was not fantastic. Not even close. In fact, my notes in my running log state that it was, “not a lactate threshold workout, but a reflux threshold workout. Awesome.
So, I’m learning some lessons this week. Hopefully I can turn these little lessons into progress. Nobody wants to see any more race photos full of moob (sorry about that).
Here’s the numbers:
This week’s mileage: 22 miles
Total streak mileage: 125 miles
Six weeks already? I guess it has been 42 straight days of at least a mile. (Not that I’m counting. Oh, wait. Yes I am.)
This week was one of those grind-it-out, just-get-out-there-already, you’ll-remember-why-you-like-this-once-you-get-started kind of weeks. I was again confined to the treadmill for a few runs, since we seem to be locked into the monsoon pattern for weather here in the panhandle. I did manage to get outside a couple of times, one of which was the group run I do on Mondays. Thank goodness for a little
peer pressure accountability.
Had a little scare this week, as I got sucked into a late-night History Channel black hole and nearly missed a run. It was close, but I had to tell myself that King Tut would still be dead when I got back from my run. For those of you wondering, he was still quite deceased upon my return.
I’m hoping that this week was just one of those times when you have to force yourself to get out there no matter what. But that’s what a run streak is about, right?
Here are the numbers for week 6.
This week’s mileage: 14.35 miles
Total streak mileage: 103 miles
Wait, didn’t I just post about week 4? Ok, I’m catching up. Don’t judge.
This week has been crazy. Sure, we’re on our break between summer school sessions, but we’ve been running around like crazy, trying to get the house ready for our expanding family. After a legendary trip to IKEA, I’ve been trying to turn this
In addition, it is monsoon season here in the Southeast. We had four straight days of heavy rain this week, forcing me onto the treadmill at the gym most nights (Yippee!). So what’s a guy to do? Sign up for a 4th of July race, of course.
The Firecracker 5K was a soggy one, to say the least. I was imagining that I would be drenched as soon as I got out of the car. Fortunately, the rain stopped for a few hours. Unfortunately, the course resembled a steeplechase, and the humidity was like July in Florida. (Oh, wait…)
The race went fine, and my time reflected both the conditions and the maintenance phase my training is in. Here’s a photo of yours truly, exercising the freedom to show a little leg on the 4th.
I realized that I also was showing a little more moob than I’d like. Let’s face it. Nobody wants to see that. It may be time to tighten up on the nutritional front around here.
The run streak is still going strong, and here are the stats:
Week 5 mileage: 15.8 miles
Total streak mileage: 88.7 miles
Mileage is a little less this week. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was the holiday. Regardless, I’m reminded of the wise words of one of the fathers of our great country.
Anyway, keep exercising the freedom to get out there and run!
Sorry this is a few days late. I know there are so many of you who just can’t make it through a Saturday morning without reading about how my summer run streak is going. Again, my apologies, but we’re on “buh-cation!”
That doesn’t mean that my running is on vacation, though. I’ve been keeping up with my run streak each day, having to rely on a hotel treadmill the past couple of days.
Anyway, here’s the report.
Week 4 mileage: 19.7 miles
Total streak mileage: 72.9 miles
Just a quick mid-week update: Nearly a month into the Summer Run Streak, and things are going strong. I’ve managed to find time in our schedule each day to get out there for at least a little bit. Today, I am getting my Remicade infusion. It’s a three-hour process each eight weeks, and while I don’t necessarily look forward to the IV, I do enjoy the time to just sit and think about where things are at. Let’s call it medically-induced reflection.
This medicine has allowed me some sense of control over both my ulcerative colitis and my psoriatic arthritis, without which I would not be chronicling a summer run streak. The only running I would be doing would be to the nearest public restroom (Believe me when I tell you, I know where each and every public restroom is located in the greater Tallahassee area).
Instead, I am looking forward to my run this afternoon. And tomorrow’s. I can’t wait until my last “day off” from running (May 31) drops off the graph on my training log. Almost there.
This week was fairly uneventful, as far as running was concerned. Kind of hitting my stride (Sorry, I had to.) as far as getting out there each day. This week was eventful in other areas of life, however.
I enrolled in grad school this week, so that my schedule will be nice and full starting in July (I can’t stand all this free time). The two-year-old has promised me that he will entertain himself. More on that later.
I did hit the halfway point for my 2013 mileage goal this week, a few days ahead of schedule. That’s probably good, given that we are going to be superbusy around here come November.
Also, the online running log that I have been diligently using for the past two years has been inaccessible twice in the past two weeks (only minor freak-outs from this guy). So my latest running purchase is an 18-month Moleskine planner. That’s right. This guy’s going low-tech for his data back-up.
So, as the summer progresses, I’ll keep trucking away each day and Little Man will keep working on his independent play skills. As of last night, he was pushing his shopping cart around the house all nudey-like. I’d attach a picture, but I don’t need my blog flagged as inappropriate. Maybe he’s heard too much talk about a run streak around our house lately.
This week’s mileage: 18.5 miles
Total streak miles: 53.2 miles
